Uzbekistan is celebrating the Day of the Defenders of the Motherland on 14 January. On 13 December, a solemn meeting was held at the Turkiston palace in Tashkent to mark the event.
Hokim (mayor) of Tashkent A.Tukhtayev opened the meeting. The state anthem of Uzbekistan was played. The State advisor to the President H.Sultanov read the congratulatory greeting of the head of the state Islam Karimov to the defenders of the Motherland.
As a result of the reforms of the army, a completely new system of formation and management of the Armed Forces has been created, and a reliable defense complex of the country was formed.
In November 2008, President Islam Karimov signed a decree on improvement of the statutory military service in the Armed Forces.
In accordance with this document, the citizens of Uzbekistan are now called up to the military service one time per year (in February-March) instead of the previous two times.
Sergeant schools and higher military colleges provided with modern facilities allow training the servicemen based on the latest scientific and technical achievements.
The military servicemen have been provided with a number of preferences aimed at improving their families’ living conditions.
On 11 January, President Islam Karimov signed a decree on awarding a group of law-enforcement bodies, as well as defense and emergency ministries with state awards, orders and medals.
These awards were presented at the meeting, together with awards to the winners of the Armed Forces contest.
